This issue of the AR called " Architecture for the arts" features a new single volume building for the arts situated at a waterfront site of Weerwater, an artificial lake in Amsterdam. The Arts Centre is fairly monolythic and has simple serene aesthetic with some facades completely glazed, reflecting the tranquille aquatic setting. I appreciate the non-dominating aesthetic of the architecture, placing the arts at the forefront. The floors are designed in non-hierarchitcal plan which recalls the architectural language of a large warehouse. Below is an extract which I thought was interesting:
" Visitors can invent their own circuits around this fluid network of cellular spaces, which like a huge sponge, is percolated at intervals by a series of internal patios that bring light into the dense, deep plan. "
