Photography Group Show, The Independent, Jan 22, 2005 by Peter Chapman

ART: PRIVATE VIEW: Photography 2005 to 12 Feb Victoria Miro Gallery,
Independent, The (London), Jan 22, 2005 by Peter Chapman

This group show at the Victoria Miro Gallery features six young artists, all of whom work with photography, and so it offers the viewer the chance to compare and contrast their different approaches, and how individual technique can serve specific aesthetic ambitions.

Florian Maier-Aichen, for example, snaps large-format pictures of landscapes and then "enhances" them, to mesmerise the viewer. Idris Khan is also influenced by art history: his multi-layered images can end up looking like Turner seascapes.
However, Stephen Gill, a documentarist, never retouches. Instead, he relies entirely on his eye's uncanny ability to spot the quirky moment. At first sight, a man walking along a path appears to have no head, then you realise it's been obscured by a sign attached to a chain-link fence.
Unlike Gill, the German photographer Bettina von Zwehl produced her intimate portraits of young women in a studio environment - this allows her to bring considerable intensity to the task. Her goal is to reveal the psychological complexity of her subjects: to a large extent, she succeeds.
